Under the canopy of mine
Handcut Paper, 2.5 x 1.5 x 1.6m, 2023.
The unbearable lightness of being: In terms of this installation, the cross-cultural imagery of Singapore and Vienna is depicted through automatic hand-cut paper. Conveying the sense of unity and differences of the embarrassing shallowness and prettiness of my own cultural identity. The eluding nature of the paper stays peripheral - not strikingly bold at your face but something that lingers above your self of concrete physical being. A hovering thought, a hovering weight that lightly dazzles sunlight onto the form of the people under the canopy (over-beautifying the strenuous labour to create a facade of a canopy). An appreciation of cultural beauty, the colourless feeling of belonging and identity. Always something but never one thing.
